I'm posing a question to everyone involved in yoga of any aspect. I am curious to know your thoughts on the use of mirrors for yoga? A few years ago, as a workshop, the instructor told me I had a 'banana back' habit in my downward dog. He said, aside from the other general cues to use a mirror to make sure my lower abdomen was tucking in to support my lower spine. My first thought was 'I don't like mirrors.' Since then I hadn't been around a studio with mirrors. Recently, I have taught and still do at three different studios where there is one wall entirely in mirrors. I tend to shy away from them, as I don't want the general stigma to turn to body image, how the clothing fits, etc.. I have found though, that a lot of my students don't mind them so much. So, I suppose I return to the question of whether the student would rather instruct the pose alignment and give adjustments if necessary or of they would rather have that as well as seeing the change in their pose in a mirror. I guess I hesitate on students being self-conscious and perhaps too much to say that they would prefer not to see themselves in a mirror and therefor take them out of the moment of their practice and become distracted by self criticism.I await your thoughts. :) Namaste

I use a mirror to check my alignment at times. For some poses you simply cannot see yourself without twisting around too much (downward dog is borderline on this as you need to twist your head to see yourself).

I use a 2x5 'door mirror' that I can move around the room as needed...or turn around when I don't want the distraction.

I also feel that if you find yourself gazing into a mirror like Narcissus or the opposite and avoiding looking at yourself, you have some internal "mental" re-alignment to do. :+)

How do you feel about video? A video of your practice can really show you a thing or two...

Andrea,
I have taken two of your courses at NCC. The mirror on the side of the room would be perfect for everyone to see you as well as notice their own posture during the class. Anyone who doesn't want to look in the mirror does not have to because you could offer to have them stand toward the back. But your reflection would be more visible, which would make it a bit easier in that room.
P.S. Thanks for the info about the yoga journal online. I did one free class, and I purchased a beginner video at Walmart over the holidays. I'm looking forward to joining another class as well.

Namaste Andrea.

It was wonderful reading your blog. About the mirror (as few of our friends have pointed out here), it can be a mess at times, specially when you are in a pose and try looking in the mirror to check. You may end up messing up the entire alignment and (lol) end up with a serious jam in your muscles (my experience speaks, lol, again). For you, what I recommend is, when you are in the pose, as per your perfection, ask a friend or someone to shoot your picture from all four sides. Then observe it and keep the area of correction in mind. It will help correct.

I see you have been reading 'Light on Yoga'. If you read it, you will notice how Iyenger Guruji emphasizes on knee locks and spine alignments while doing the asan. Translated, this means, awareness while doing the asans.

Try my idea. Am sure it will help
